Etymology[edit]

From Arabic وَحْش (waḥš, deserted, solitary; wild beast). Compare also related وَحْشة (waḥša, wildness, shyness, solitude, fear) and وَحْشِيّ (waḥšiyy, wild, uncivilised, cruel).
