From Proto-Germanic *walhaz ‎(Celt, Roman, foreigner) (OE wealh) + Proto-Germanic *hnuts ‎(nut) (OE hnutu). Cognate with Middle Dutch walnote (Dutch walnoot), Middle Low German walnōte, German Walnuss, Old Norse valhnot (Swedish valnöt).
