Etymology

From Proto-Baltic *warā (“power, force, authority”) (shared with Lithuanian varà (“power, force, authority”), Latvian vara (“power, authority”)). Possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wert- (“to turn, bend”), through a semantic development “turn, compel” > “force, power."
