Etymology

From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese gẽollo, geonllo, gionllo, jeonllo, from Vulgar Latin *genuclum, syncopated from earlier *genuculum, variant of Late Latin geniculum, diminutive of Latin genū (“knee”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵónu.

Cognate with Portuguese joelho and Spanish hinojo.
