Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish یاهو (yāhū, “Oh God!, See here!”, interj.), from یا (yā, “O!”, interj.) +‎ هو (hū, “he, it, any individual talked to, (in Sufism) God”), from Arabic يَا (yā) + هُوَ (huwa). Cognates with Azerbaijani yahu.

1. (colloquial) Hey!, Look here!.

2. (colloquial) Used additionally to draw attention to what was said.

   Biz onları kahvaltı niyetine yeriz, yahu. ― We'll eat them for breakfast!

   Birbirimizi görmeyeli uzun zaman oldu, yahu. ― It's been so long we haven't seen each other!

   Sadece küçücük bir beyaz yalan, yahu. ― It's just a tiny white lie!

3. (colloquial) Used to emphasize pleading in a sentence.

   Zavallı adama biraz şefkatli davran, yahu. ― Treat the poor man a little kindly!

   Neden küstünüz bilmiyorum ama barışın gitsin, yahu. ― I don't know why you're cross with each other but just make up already!
