Particle[edit]

يَا ‎()

  1. vocative particle, preceding a noun used in direct address; sometimes translated as O or hey
    يا كندا!

    O Canada!
    يا كريم...
    yā karīm...
    (Hey) Kareem, ...

Synonyms[edit]

Usage notes[edit]

  • In Classical (Koranic) orthography, ا ‎('alif) was not used to represent a vowel sound except at the beginning of a word; the dagger alif diacritic was used instead. As a result, يَا ‎() was in effect a one-letter word (يَٰ ‎()). Like other one-letter words (such as بِ ‎(bi) and لِ ‎(li)), it was therefore written joined to the following word. This is still the case in many modern editions of the Koran. Cf. the ayah below (Surat al-Baqara 55, translation Muhammad Asad)
And [remember] when you said, "O Moses indeed we shall not believe thee unto we see God face to face!" - whereupon the thunderbolt of punishment overtook you before your very eyes.

Interjection[edit]

  2. hey
