[edit]From Proto-Germanic *wulgī, from Proto-Indo-European *wl̥kʷíh₂s (“she-wolf”), from *wĺ̥kʷos (“wolf”), whence ulfr (“wolf”). Cognate with Sanskrit वृकी (vṛkī, “she-wolf”), Lithuanian vìlkė (“she-wolf”) and Proto-Slavic *vьlčìca.
