Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse ósk, from Proto-Germanic *wunskō, from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁- (to wish, love). The 'n' was re-added under the influence of Middle Low German (compare German Low German wönschen (wish), Plautdietsch Wensch (wish)).

  1. a wish, desire
Eg har eit ynske om at dette går som planlagd.
My wish is that this goes as planned.
  2. a friendly thought or wish for someone else
