Etymology[edit]

From Old High German zehan, from Proto-Germanic *tehun. As in Central Franconian zehn and Dutch tien, the group -eha- must have been contracted and merged with the diphthong -ia-. This Old High German *zian regularly yields Luxembourgish zéng. Also cognate with German zehn, English ten, Icelandic tíu.
