Etymology

According to Orel, "A difficult word without any reliable explanation". Others have suggested Proto-Albanian *ghemen, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵem- (to marry), cognate to Ancient Greek γαμέω (gaméō, marry), Avestan 𐬰𐬁𐬨𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬌𐬀 (zāmaoiia, brother of son-in-law), Sanskrit जामा (jāmā, daughter-in-law) but with insurmountable semantic problems.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈzɛməɾ/, [ˈzɛːməɹ]
  • Lua error in Module:parameters at line 95: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "Gheg" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E. IPA(key): /ˈzɛ̃ːməɾ/, [ˈzɛ̃ːməɹ]
