Etymology

ziemny (pertaining to soil, earth) +‎ -ak, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Slavic *zemьnъ. Displaced earlier jabłko ziemne, itself a calque from German Erdapfel (literally earth-apple).[1] Compare Slovak zemiak, French pomme de terre (literally apple of the earth).
