Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German ertapfel, erdapfel, ertöpfel, erdöpfel, ertaphel (mandrake, cucumber, pumpkin, melon), from Old High German erdapful, erdaphul (pumpkin, squash, melon), from Proto-West Germanic *erþapplu, equivalent to Erde (earth) +‎ Apfel (apple). Cognate with Dutch aardappel (potato) and West Frisian ierappel (potato). Modern sense probably a calque of French pomme de terre (potato).
