zimorodek

Etymology

zima (winter) + rodzić (to give birth), thus literally "born in winter". Corrupted from earlier ziemiorodek, from ziemia (soil, ground) + rodzić (to give birth), thus literally "giving birth in the soil". This accurately describes the nesting habits of the bird, which makes nests in burrows dug in steep riverside cliffs.
