From Old Persian 𐎧𐏁𐎹𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎠 (x-š-y-a-r-š-a /⁠Xšayāršā⁠/), nominative singular of *Xšayā-ṛšān- (literally ruling over heroes),[1] from *xšay- (literally to rule) + *ṛšān- (hero).
