Etymology[edit]
Either from Byzantine Greek γουβάς (goubás, “pit, cave”), itself from Vulgar Latin *cova, from Latin cavea (“hollow, cavity”), or borrowed from Albanian guvë (“cavity”). Compare Aromanian guva (“hole, cavity”).
