Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Byzantine Greek ἐξώστης (exṓstēs, balcony),[1] from Koine Greek ἐξώστης (exṓstēs, platform of ship or for docking ships), from Ancient Greek sense "one who drives out". From stem ἐξωσ- of the ancient verb ἐξωθέω, ἐξωθῶ (exōthéō, exōthô, force out).[2]
