From Byzantine Greek κλαρίν (klarín), from Koine Greek κλάριον (klárion), from contraction of a hypothetical earlier form *κλαδάριον (*kladárion), from a diminutive of Ancient Greek κλάδος (kládos). Compare κλαδί (kladí), as well as the borrowed doublet κλάδος (kládos).
