Ancient Greek

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Solmsen compares μόλις to μῶλος (môlos, turmoil, fight), as well as to μέλλω (méllō, to be about to do, to hesitate), but Beekes considers the former comparison phonetically problematic due to the root vocalism, and the latter semantically uncompelling.[1]
