From Proto-Hellenic *ťāmeron, for earlier *ki-hāmeron, with the first component from Proto-Indo-European *ḱe (this, here). By surface analysis, a univerbation of κί- (kí-) +‎ ἡμέρα (hēméra, day).[1] See also Latin cis, hic.
