[edit]Learned borrowing from Byzantine Greek συναγωνισμός (sunagōnismós, “assistance”) with adaptation of meaning to συναγωνίζομαι (synagonízomai, “to compete”).[1] By surface analysis, συναγωνίζ(ομαι) (synagoníz(omai)) + -μός (-mós).
