From Ottoman Turkish فندق (funduq), from Arabic فُنْدُق (funduq), from Middle Persian pndk' (pondik), shortened from Ancient Greek Ποντικόν κάρυον (Pontikón káruon), from Ποντικόν (Pontikón, of Pontus) (a region in Turkey) + κάρυον (káruon, nut).
