From Byzantine Greek φορτούνα (phortoúna), borrowed from Venetian fortuna, from Latin fortūna.

1. (meteorology, sea) rough sea, storm, tempest, squall

   Synonym: τρικυμία (trikymía)

   Antonym: γαλήνη (galíni)

   Αν τα χταπόδια χώνονται στα λαγούμια τους και τα σκεπάζουν με βότσαλα, προμηνύεται φουρτούνα.

   When octopuses burrow down and cover themselves with pebbles it forecasts a storm.

2. (figuratively) a chain of unexpected and unpleasant events
