[edit]Inherited from Byzantine Greek πτερούγα (pteroúga), from πτερούγ(ι) (pteroúg(i)) + -α (-a, augmentative suffix), from Ancient Greek πτερύγιον (pterúgion), from πτέρυξ (ptérux, “wing”) + -ιον (-ion, diminutive suffix).[1]
