Etymology[edit]

Corruption of Ancient Greek Μακκαβαῖος (Makkabaîos, Maccabee), as this day is also the liturgical celebration of martyr of the Maccabees, through folk etymology, reanalyzed as мак (mak) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ ві́яти (víjaty).
