Vasmer connects it to the root of гвор (gvor, bladder, tumor), ultimately PIE *gʷreh₂- (heavy). The phonology is difficult and may show Iranian influence (Proto-Indo-Iranian *gr̥Húš, modern Persian گران (gerân, heavy)).
