Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *zorja (star) +‎ Proto-Slavic *plavati (to swim, to float, to sail) +‎ -ец (-jec), analogous to марапла́вец (maraplávjec, seafarer). Cognate with Ukrainian зорепла́вець (zoreplávecʹ). Compare with Russian звездопла́ватель (zvezdoplávatelʹ).
