Etymology

Derived from the noun истерия, from the ancient Greek ὑστέρα for uterus (ancient medicine explained psychological disorders through problems with the uterus), further from the Russian истерика — a formal borrowing from the Latin hysterica (passiō) "sickness of the nerves," from which is derived the German Hysterie for hysteria.
