Inherited from Old East Slavic лѣнивꙑи (lěnivyi), from Proto-Slavic *lěnivъ (lazy, sluggish), from *lěniti + *-ivъ, from *lěniti, from *lěnь / *lěnjь (laziness) or *lěnъ (lazy, slow). By surface analysis, лень (lenʹ) +‎ -и́вый (-ívyj).
