Erzya

Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *ńizańa, compounded from *ńizə +‎ *ańa. The first component is from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *nisɜ (“woman, wife”), whence Northern Sami nisu (“woman”). The second component may be from Proto-Uralic *ańa (“wife of an older male relative; mother”) and cognate with Hungarian anya (“mother”).
