Bulgarian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *perporъ, a variant of Proto-Slavic *porporъ (stroke, waving). The original Slavic lemma seems to be reduplicated action noun of Proto-Slavic *perti (to propel) (similar to Proto-Slavic *golgolъ (word, verb), *tǫtonъ/*tǫtenъ (rumble, roar)), but has been reanalyzed in Bulgarian as a derivative of Proto-Slavic *porъ (advancement, push, strike) with the prefix *per-.
