Etymology

Reflexive construction from Proto-Slavic *puliti (to protrude) (from *pula (protusion, bulge)), attested in Modern Bulgarian as dialectal пу́ля (púlja, to protude (eyes), to watch over attentively) (probably back-formed from the current meaning).
