If the original meaning is “gall bladder”, then perhaps inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ml̥ǵʰ-, zero-grade of *melǵʰ- (to swell) and cognate with Sanskrit मल्ह (malhá, having teats in the dewlap) and Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬁𐬥𐬀 (mərəzāna, belly).
