Etymology

Originally a dialectal word, continuing the root seen in reduplicated Middle Armenian պոպոկ (popok, green husk on unripe walnut). For the sense development compare պոպկել (popkel, to husk a walnut; to strip, peel, skin; to pull out, tear out, pluck) derived from the latter.
