Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Middle Armenian ջրիմուռ (ǰrimuṙ). Revived by Norayr who put this as a translation of French algue.[1] Appeared in dictionaries published after Norayr,[2][3][4][5][6][7] and now adopted as the standard word for "alga".

Etymology[edit]

Probably formed as ջրի (ǰri, water's) +‎ *մուռ (*muṙ, moss), the simplex of reduplicated մամուռ (mamuṙ, moss).
