Likely a remnant of the accusative case (used adverbially to mean “at night”) of לַיִל (láyil), from Proto-Semitic *layl-. Cognate with Arabic لَيْل (layl), لَيْلَة (layla), Aramaic לֵילְיָא (lēləyā), Classical Syriac ܠܹܠܝܵܐ (lēlyā).
