Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian dmbʾwnd (dumbāwand).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Wikipedia gives the original interpretation as "the mountain from which smoke and ash arises", albeit without any references. In this case, the first component is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuHmás (smoke). What would the second component be? A derivative of Proto-Indo-European *bʰewg- (to release) (where would the -nd come from?) or something else?”
