Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly from a form of Arabic هَوَى (hawā, love, passion, fancy, whim); compare the plural هَوايَا (hawāyā) and the adjective هَوائِيّ (hawāʔiyy, whimsical, fantastic). However, the semantic development is not immediately clear. Otherwise perhaps from Arabic هُوّة (huwwa, chasm, abyss, depth) through an extended form like حباية (ḥabbāya) from حَبّة (ḥabba, pimple). In this case the semantics are more satisfactory, but it would have to be verified whether such a form huwwāya exists (or existed).
