Inherited from Sanskrit देवर (devará), from Proto-Indo-European *dayh₂wḗr. Cognate with Hindustani دیور (dyor) / देवर (devar), Bengali দেবর (debor) and Punjabi ਦਿਓਰ (diora). Wider cognates include Russian де́верь (déverʹ), Armenian տեգր (tegr), Lithuanian dieveris.
