- Inherited from Sanskrit *नयशाला (nayaśālā), from नय (naya, “conduct, plan”) + शाला (śālā, “shed, stable, house”).
- Inherited from Sanskrit *नीतिशाला (nītiśālā), from नीति (nīti, “conduct”) + शाला (śālā, “shed, stable, house”).
- First attested in 1585 Old Gujarati नेसाल (nesāla), which is derived from the earlier लेसाल (lesāla), first attested in 1355, inherited from Sanskrit लेखशाला (lekhaśālā, “writing school”).

- An exam was established to promote the study of their own literature among the natives and to teach them to write in their regional language. Students from both English and Gujarati schools could sit for this exam.
