Etymology[edit]

From ผี (pǐi, ghost) +‎ ขนุน (kà-nǔn, jack tree); literally "jack tree ghost" or "ghost of jack tree"; from the fact that prostitutes in Bangkok often stood under jack trees along the Lot Canal at night.[1]
