Burmese

[edit]
ဒေါင်း

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m-dwaŋ (peacock); cognate with Tibetan མདོངས (mdongs, eye in a peacock's feathers) (STEDT). STEDT also adduces Old Chinese (OC *kʰloːŋʔ, “peacock”) as a cognate, though the initial in the Chinese form is problematic and better matches Austroasiatic forms; perhaps the word is areal across Southeast Asia.
