Georgian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From ფერადი (peradi, colorful) +‎ კანიანი (ḳaniani, skinned, someone with a skin [of a certain type]).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /pʰeradkʼaniani/, [pʰeɾadkʼaniani]
  • Hyphenation: ფე‧რად‧კა‧ნი‧ა‧ნი

Noun

[edit]

ფერადკანიანი (peradḳaniani) (plural ფერადკანიანები)

  1. nonwhite person, someone of non-white ethnicity
  2. black person, someone of African ancestry or African-American
  3. multiracial person, brown person (to lesser extent)

Usage notes

[edit]

Despite the word-for-word translation for this word being colorful skinned, it carries no negative connotations in Georgian. Please also note that while the term “colored” seems similar, “colored” denotes to a result of a process of coloring, implying that default is white and the rest are with having color added, having been colored. However, Georgian word “ფერადი” simply means “having color” or “being colorful”.
