From Proto-Kartvelian *ɣel- +‎ ჯიჯი (cici). Cognate with Old Georgian ღლ-ი-ა-ჲ (ɣl-i-a-y), Svan ლა-ღელ-ი-ა̈შ (la-ɣel-i-äš).
