From Proto-Berber *am-, from *a- (noun-forming prefix) +‎ *m- (instumental prefix), from Proto-Afroasiatic *ʔa- and *m-. Cognate with ​Arabic مِـ (mi-) and Hausa ma-. By surface analysis, ⴰ- (a-) +‎ ⵎ- (m-).
