Sino-Korean word from 공화(共和) (gonghwa, republic) + 국(國) (guk, country), from an orthographic borrowing from Japanese 共和国(きょうわこく) (kyōwakoku).

    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
