Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Sin'gan guhwang chwaryo (新刊救荒撮要 / 신간구황촬요), 1660, as Early Modern Korean ᄆᆡ오 (Yale: moywo), combination of ᄆᆡᆸ (moyp) + suffix - (o). After the mid-15th century, () changed to (o), (u) before a vowel other than (i). See also 맵다 (maepda) and ().
