[edit]From 비다 (bida, “empty; vacant”) + 방(房) (bang, “room”).
Attested in the Junggan Nogeoldae Eonhae (1795) as 뷘방 (pwuynpang).

- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
