Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from 地主, composed of (land) and (lord; master; owner). Compare Japanese 地主 (jinushi; jishu; tokonushi).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

địa chủ

  1. (historical) a feudal landlord

Usage notes[edit]

  • A địa chủ is only a feudal landlord, one who would own agricultural land, or plantations, and have other people work for him on that land. A modern "landlord" or "landlady" is simply chủ phòng/nhà trọ (literally owner of the flats/apartments/houses for rent/lease), one who owns real estate and rents it out to other people.
