Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἀποσταίνω (apostaínō), through its passive aorist ἀποστάθηκα (apostáthēka) from stem αποστ- (apost-) of the ancient verb ἀφίσταμαι (aphístamai, withdraw, stop) and metaplasm to the verb suffix -αίνω (-aíno) in the pattern of verbs like ζεστάθηκα (zestáthika) ~ ζεσταίνω (zestaíno). Also see the Hellenistic form ἀφιστάνω (aphistánō).[1][2]

A rare spelling αποστένω (aposténo), according to Andriotis,[3] from the passive past ἀποστάθηκα (apostáthēka) of the Mediaeval form ἀποστέκω (apostékō).
