Inherited from Koine Greek καλλιτέχνης (kallitékhnēs), from Ancient Greek κάλλος (kállos, beauty) + τέχνη (tékhnē, craft) +‎ -ης (-ēs, nominal suffix). The modern sense of "artist" is a semantic loan from French artiste.
